1) Production Identification and Description

The future machine that I will create is an umbrella spinner. An umbrella spinner is a device that makes the umbrella move in a circle and take out all of the rainwater that is in the umbrella so that rusting and odours are reduced. Even though that this machine seems very simple, there are a lot of scientific principals to this product.

 

The machine is a see through cylinder. Inside the cylinder there are two gears, one small gear and one big gear. On the big gear there is a plastic cylinder with holes in it. These holes are where the water comes of the machine. On top of the machine, there is a hole where the handle of the umbrella can hang on.  On the gears, there are sticks that are on the smaller gear that when you turn it the big gear moves. As the big gear turns, the plastic cylinder will turn making the umbrella move as well.  This makes the water fall off from the umbrella making it clean. The machine uses something called gears. Gears are the core of my product. Gears are wheels that have teeth that mesh with each other. There is a big gear and a small gear in my product the big one is called the wheel and the smaller one is called the pinion. Depending on the way you put the force in to, the direction of the gears can change. My umbrella will be on top of the wheel and the handle will be attached to the pinion.

 

As mentioned before, the need that it will meet is, take out the rain water from the umbrella. When you go outside in the rain, especially when there is a rainstorm, you always have to use your umbrella. Usually when you use your umbrella, it is soaked with water and you can’t take it inside a public place or your house. That is what this machine is for. You can put this machine in front of your house and take out the water from it. If you use this machine, you don’t have to worry about taking the wet umbrella in to your house.

 

I personally chose this machine because of global warming; a lot of people have problems with the rainstorms that are becoming stronger than before. This means that people will need this machine more than before. I am interested in this field because a lot of rain comes in the places I lived in, especially in Turkey and Korea. And I have noticed that a lot of people have problems with the rain and the umbrellas that they have to use. I have been to the public places like malls and saw all of the rainwater on the ground. Because there was rainwater on the ground, it created a strange odor and it made people slip occasionally. That is why I thought of this idea so that rainwater can be reduced in public places.

a) The client that I want to consume this machine is quite large. Because everyone is monsoonaffected because of the rain, I would say that ages 5+ are my target age. But the target area would be East Asia. As seen in the picture of the world’s rainfall, we can see that the middle down to the southern hemisphere rains a lot so my target markets are those countries. Also it might be the most specific in the months of July and June in the East Asian countries because then is when most of the world has rainfall as shown in the picture. In June and July, which is summer in East Asian countries, they have something called a monsoon. A monsoon is in which in the summer, the countries rain a lot. This is caused by the wind direction, the temperature of the land, and the sea. The motion of the wind in summer goes from the sea to the land and back. Because the sea is so cold in summer and the land is of high temperature, they collide and create clouds and eventually rain. In the picture, the most little rain is marked as white and the most rain marked as purple. The countries that are colored white wouldn’t use my machine as much as well.

To analyze this video quickly, we can notice that the east Asian countries are getting effected because of the monsoon season. They also have a guest from a place called mercy relief talking about how they are trying to help the countries that are trapped and affected because of the rain storm that is devouring everything. For example, they mention that a typhoon had hit the Philippines and they mentioned that 7 people were dead and 2 were missing. My product can’t help prevent these sad endings, but it can help them to keep at least their houses clean and help keep their minds clean as well.

 

My target market will benefit from my machine in a lot of different ways and perspectives. One of which being that they wouldn’t have to take up space in the yard or their house to dry up the umbrella that is wet. Normally when people dry up their umbrellas, they open then up and wait for it to dry. The negative effects of this way are these. Firstly, they let out a rusting odor when it is let out too long.

 

Secondly, they take up space that can be used for other reasons. If people use my machine, it can reduce these problems and make these problems disappear. For the first problem it will dry more quickly which will cause the rusting to lessen. For the second problem it take up less space around in the house because the machine is smaller than an umbrella when it is big. These were the effects that my product has on the individual but my machine can make people benefit as a group as well. If my product is put in front of malls, people can lessen the amount of rainwater leakage from the umbrellas. Also it can reduce work for the people that clean all of these puddles inside. My product not only benefits the consumers, but it benefits the people around the consumers as well. This what you call that you caught 2 birds with one stone.

i) Environmental Impacts

Continuing from before, I have mentioned that my product can catch 2 birds with one stone. This means that my product cannot only benefit the consumers but the people around them as well. Even though the cleaners benefiting is one example of this, there are bigger ways that my machine can benefit bigger amount of people and even the world.

 

One aspect where my product can benefit is environmental. When you think of umbrellas, I doubt that anyone can think of the environment benefiting because of this product, which simply takes water from the umbrellas. But there is more to this product than people expect. There was an invention before my product, which could prevent the water from leaking in quite a different way. This invention works like this, if you put the umbrella in to a hole in a machine, it will be put in to a plastic bag. At first people thought this was a great idea but it was not far until people discovered that there was a major problem in the environment because of this product. Because there were too many plastic covers used, a lot of countries had a lot of down turns of waste. About one million plastic bags are used in a minute. That means that each year about 1 trillion plastic bags are used up. But my product makes the world so that you don’t need to use plastic bags and can remove water for you. There are a lot more positive impacts then there are of negative impacts because as we know, nothing can be perfect.

 

Plastic bags also affect animals as well. Greenpeace, which is an organization, says that 90% of the trash that animals choke on or are tangled in is plastic which is well over half the amount. Again, my product prevents this from happening.

 

Some people might think recycling might be the answer to this problem but it is shown that recycling can actually worsen the environment. Gerry Fishbeck, the vice president of UNited Resource Recovery Corporation, which is a recycling company, says “So even though it’s recyclable, that material will get separated out and disposed of as waste at the recycling facility.” He is trying to mention that even though the material is said to be “recycled” it is all turned in to waste and thrown out.

 

One negative impact is that people might think that because mine is made out of plastic as well, it will effect the environment as well and eventually, they might not use my product. But however I believe that the positive impacts out weigh the negative impacts because although my product uses plastic as well, the plastic is reusable while the plastic bags are not.

ii) Economic Impact

One other aspect where my product can be beneficial is economically. People say that if we use plastic cover sheets or bags to cover up our umbrellas, we can recycle them and it is no problem. But statistics show that they are wrong. In 2002, in New York City they were recycling and all of a sudden they stopped the recycling of glass and plastic. The mayor, Michael Bloomberg explained that the cost of recycling was much more than throwing it out. This means that the economy has to be stable even to recycle plastic. To prevent some of the plastic from being thrown out, the economy should use my safe, long lasting and affordable product.

 

Because no product is perfect, there might be some negative impacts on my product as well. Because it is long lasting and it is complicated to make it will cost more than a bag of plastic. But I believe that the positive of my product outweighs the negative. Even if you need to by my product it only costs about 15 lira which is about 8-10 dollars. Even just 37 million dollars- 107 million dollars are spent on just dealing with the plastics in the dumps. This shows that my product outweighs using plastic bag. This means that you can save a couple million dollars. This could be perfect for developing countries or undeveloped countries because it is affordable and yet it can be used for a long time saving up money and building up the economy.

My product cannot only help things around us but can help the world in things such as the environment and the economy.

4) Designing your mechanism: Anticipating Problems and Creating Solutions

a) Anticipating Problems

 

  1. Color: The color is a problem because this is what determines if it will be catchy enough for people to buy.
  2. Time: The Time is problem because I have a fixed amount of time when I have to make my product.
  3. Materials: The materials are a problem (this is also linked in to the color) because I might not find a material that fits exactly with my gears.
  4. Size: The size is a problem because the product cannot be big but my product will not work if it is small.
  5. Weight: The weight of the umbrella spinner is a problem because it not meant to be portable but you do have to move it in to the house and it can’t be heavy.
  6. Testing: The testing part is important and is a problem because there might be some testing against specification that I might not be able to try on my product.
  7. Trash: When I finish my product the water that is left is the problem and when I am designing it I have to make a place where I can drain the water.
  8. Cost: The cost is a problem because if I use too much money to build my product, my clients will have to buy it very expensively.
  9. Shape: The shape of the product is a problem because I have to find a shape of the cover that fits my gears perfectly.
  10. Style: The style is a problem because when I am designing my product, it has to be something that all people will like and not just a preference of one person.
  11. Transportation: The transportation of the product is a problem (this is also linked in to weight) because it can’t be heavy because I cannot carry it around when in making.

 

b)    Brainstorming of Possible Solutions

 

  1. Color: I have decided to make my product using semi- transparent material so I won’t have a problem deciding what color I am going to use.
  2. Time: Before I start making the product, I will measure the time that we have exactly and how much it will take for me to finish each stage. I will alter the time so that I can finish before the deadline.
  3. Materials: The way to fix this problem is to go around to every shop in advance to find if the materials I need are there. If they are not, I can make my own funnels using bendable plastic.
  4. Size: Before I make the product, I will measure the potential size that it will match and I will make a final mock up and build it the way that it says on the paper.
  5. Weight: Before I make the product, I will weigh different materials and see what my products weight will be like compared to ordinary items.
  6. Testing: Because we have to try at least some of the testing against specifications, before I make the product, I will check the testing against specifications that I can do and I will make them work.
  7. Trash: There are holes in the mechanisms that will help draining water and I will test it to see if it works and fix the problem if needed.
  8. Cost: I will use materials that I can find in the house to make my product if I can.
  9. Shape: Because the shape of the gears are circles, I will choose a plastic cylinder which has a circle for its top.
  10. Style: The style is a problem because when I am designing my product, it has to be something that all people will like and not just a preference of one person.
  11. Transportation: I will use materials that are light so that it will be easier to carry when I am making things.

ii)         These three products are all related and are the things that I used to think of my idea of a umbrella spinner. The one that I want to analyze here most is the salad spinner because that is the one that relates to my product the most.

In a typical kitchen we can find something called a salad spinner. For people who don’t know what a salad spinner is, it is a device that when you spin it, the water inside the vegetables come out. This device seems very simple but there are a lot of scientific facts behind this simple machine.  One important part of the physics of this device is that it uses gears. The picture to the right is the cover of the salad spinner. If you spin the handle the gear connected to it moves the gear connected to the giant spinner and that moves. Gears are very important in this product. Gears in general are wheels with teeth and they interconnect with each other as they move.Untitled

Also the gears are separated to two sections, one is called the driver and one the follower. The driver is the one that you turn and the follower is the one that moves as you movie the driver. If you spin the salad spinner at least thrice it would start turning rapidly and take the water. The reason why this happens is because of the gear ratio. This is something that you can use to depict your gears Untitled 1in numbers. There is also a formula for this which is (number of driven teeth)/ (number of driving teeth). For example if you say that the ratio of the driver and follower are 3/6, this means that as the driver turns 3 times, the follower has 6 turns. These are the gear basics that make the salad bowl spin as well. You can also find out something called the RPM, which are the revolutions per minute.

In the Salad spinner it uses this process by when you spin the bigger wheel the smaller wheel goes around faster and more frequently making it spin rapidly after not a lot of spins. In my product, I spin the smaller gear, which is different from why we use gears, uses this. I used this for the fact that I could move something else while I am doing another thing not because I could spin fewer times. The ratio for my product is:

 

Driver: 60 Teeth

Driven: 160 Teeth

Ratio= 160:60 = 8:3

 

Also, the reason why the water comes out of the salad when it spins is because a force is made. That force is called the centrifugal force. Centrifugal force is caused when an object is moving away from the place that the object is caused to turn.

 

iii)  1) There are different types of salad spinners. Some of them you have to turn by hand to get the water out and some of them you have to press a button and a motor does it for you.

Effective: The motor salad spinner doesn’t require physical labor.

Ineffective: There is more chance of it breaking because it uses a motor.

 Looking further: The first salad spinner was made mechanically but now that there is some more technology and skills, people made something called the motor salad spinner, which doesn’t require any physical labor. Some people consider the motor salad spinner to be more effective because it is more “21st century” like, but that might not be the case. This might seem easier at first because you don’t have to work as much, but as you use it overtime, it is bound to break. Even though the crank spinner might break as well, it can be used more because all you have to do is not spin to hard so the gears fall off. That is why I believe that the salad spinner is effective.

  2)  It only washes the salad types of vegetables and not all the vegetables.

Effective: It is Effective for people who eat salads all the time.

Ineffective: It is ineffective for people who don’t eat as much salad because you can’t drain water from other vegetables.

 Looking Further: I have wrote that it only washes the salad types of vegetables and not all the vegetables. There are good effects of this such as it is effective for people who eat salad often but it might not be effective fore people who don’t. They might want to drain water out of different types of vegetables and this might be possible if we modify the salad spinner. Some people might think that it wouldn’t be easy to modify salad spinners but you will find out that it is not that hard. For example, college students were able to modify the salad spinner to be used for medical purposes. This indicates that it is possible to alter it to make it wash different products.

 

3)    Salad spinners can extend life of the salads and prevent waste.

Effective: It is effective because the world is having problems with waste and this prevents unnecessary waste.

Ineffective: Some people might want to buy fresh packaging because they don’t want to bother buying a salad spinner.

 

Looking Further: Salad Spinners are effective because they can prevent people throwing out scraps of food or special plastic bags that are used to take the water out of the salads. However, there are people who think that the salad spinner is too expensive and they don’t bother buying it. In comparison, which is going to be explained below in the economic impacts section, it is shown that buying a salad spinner is more effective than buying fresh packaged salads.

 

iv) Benefits

1) Social Benefit

The salad spinner seems to be like an object in everyday life but things like the salad spinner can help in a lot of ways surpassing the thoughts of people. It is shown scientifically that a salad spinner like machine helped detecting for anemia. This product is often referred to the centrifuge. This product has a social benefit. Anemia is an illness in which the body cannot produce enough blood cells for a person to be healthy.

 

The way this product works is this, tubes of blood are placed in the salad spinner and the turner approximately spins this for about 10 minutes. While the turner is spinning, centrifugal force is used to separate the blood. This measures the level of your blood. This is very important now days because the world health organization says that one third of the people of this world has anemia. Also the machine is only about $30 and people can buy it without a problem. The salad spinner doesn’t only have to help you in the kitchen; it can help your health as well.

 

There are a lot of positive and negative things about this product that can be discussed. For example, a positive thing is that you can measure it with less money. A negative thing is that the turner has to turn it for 10 minutes. However, even if you can use a high-tech machine it would cost a lot. Also some hesitation might be the cost that is added for the people who made the product but it can be seen that this was made by college students as an experiment and other people can make it easily as well. That is why I think that this product leans more to the positive side.

The university students in this video state that anemia is a very serious disease and it can come side by side with AIDS and malaria. They call it the Sally centrifuge because it uses the basics of centrifugal force.

Also it is shown that consumer reports showed us that pre washed greens are at least 39% contaminated with bacteria. This means that it is better if we wash it at home than to leave it to the companies.

2. Economic Benifit

Another benefit is that families can benefit from using the salad spinner economically. In the market the average cost for a cleaned, water drained lettuce is about $4. At home you can do it for an average of 4 times for the same cost. This means that if people by one salad spinner and spin for an average of 1 times a day, you can save able to save about an average of $106. Even though it seems to be not a lot of difference when you see from the present, but when you see it from the future, you have a lot of money saved and that is what counts.

Also to repeat from the previous social benifit, consumer reports showed us that pre washed greens are at least 39% contaminated with bacteria. Also it is shown that they are almost $1 an ounce. If it is expensive and costs a lot will you want to buy this product? There are both positive and negative effects on this product. Some negative effects are that the companies that sell ready-dried vegetables will go down in profit. But there are more positive impacts as in vegetable companies will go up in profit and so will the companies for the salad spinners.

 

v)  Ideas for own product

Salad spinner: This was the machine that first got me thinking about making the umbrella spinner. The ideas that I got from this are using gears to make the basket move. Another idea I got from this is having another basket on top of the spinning one so that you can drain the water more easily. The salad spinner uses centrifugal force and I wanted to do something similar to it so that I can spin the spinner without using so much strength. Also the color influenced me. I wanted it to be transparent like the salad spinner so that people could actually see what was going on inside the umbrella spinner.

6) Materials and Tools

  1. The hack Saw: The hack saw is used to cut metal and thick material. It is also used to cut wood. When using the hack saw you have to be careful not to hurt yourself.
  2. The coping Saw: The coping saw is used to cut curves in to mainly wood. Like the hack saw, you have to be careful not to hurt yourself
  3. Steel Rule: A steel rule a basically a ruler that you use to measure to see if the product that you are making matches up with the measurements on your paper. This is very important.
  4. Snips: The snips are used to cut metal wires when needed. The thing you have to be careful about the snips is that it is very tough to cut and that is why you have to be careful so that it doesn’t come to your eyes.
  5. File: The file is usually used to smooth edges. You can smooth the edges of wood so that it looks very nice.
  6. Engineer Square: The engineer square is used for measuring and cutting the shape of the material you are using without the steel rule.
  7. Pliers: The plier is mainly used for bending items or to put pressure on metals.
  8. Scissors: Scissors are used to cut thin material like paper and cardboard. You have to use the craft knife for things thicker like hard density foam board.
  9. The Screw driver: The screw driver is used to screw in bolts in to the right spots. There are different shapes for different types of bolts.
  10. Hammer: The hammer is used hit nails and to connect different pieces of wood, plastic, metal etc. together.
  11. Tenon saw: The tenon saw is generally used to cut tenon joints. Like the other saws you have to be careful not to hurt your hand.
  12. Craft Knife: The craft knife is used to cut thicker materials that scissors cannot cut such as high density foam board. You have to use a mat when you are using this because it will make marks.

7) Design Brief

I am going to design and make a product called an umbrella spinner. The target market for this product is people living in places that are very rainy since they will use more of my product that way. The materials that I am going to use are going to be semi-transparent so people can see if the water is all out but not too transparent so that it will look bad. The materials that I will use to make this product are mostly plastic products and gears. I will also be using a dowel for the handles. This product will be displayed in public areas such as in front of the malls or it can also be displayed at home. This is because those are the places that you transfer inside a building from using an umbrella. The cost of this product will be about 15-20 TL because it is not made out of expensive material.

8) Specification

Target Market: The target market for my product is people who live in rainy places.

 

Functions: The function that my product is going to do is keep rainwater from dripping from umbrellas in public areas.

 

Materials: The materials that I am going to use are types of saws. I need the saws because I will need to cut dowel. I will also need a glue gun in order to glue everything together.

 

Ergonomics/ overall sizes: The size of the product should be about 43cm of height.

 

Manufacturing processes and quantity: I will make 1 product and the process time will be the time the due date is due for the product building.

 

Equipment/ tools- requirements: The tools that I will need are Hack Saw, Steal rule, Snips, File, Engineer square, Scissors, Tenon saw, glue-gun, and a Craft knife.

 

Maintenance Requirements: The product shouldn’t be too light because then it will fly off.

 

Product life span and life cycle: The product should be reusable and it will have a 5 year guarantee.

 

Aesthetic appearance (Shape, color, texture): The shape of the product should be  an upside down cup. The color of the product is going to be semi-transparent. The texture of the product is going to be hard but smooth.

 

Quality Assurance: Quality assurance will be held once every 3 months so that clients know how not dangerous my product is.

 

Quality Control: The quality control will be held once a month to see if the product is working correctly.

 

Cost: The cost of this product is 15-20TL because it needs to be affordable to buy a lot of because you need this product for daily life.

 

Time scale and planning: It will take about 40 hours to make my product.

 

Health and safety: My product will have dangerous parts cut off so that the clients don’t become hurt.

 

Weight: The weight of this product will be less than 10 kg.

9) Testing Against Specification

Target Market: I will ask people who are suitable for this target and create a survey to see if they find this product useful or not.

 

Functions: I will test my product to see if it really prevents rainwater from falling on to public places buy using it my self.

 

Materials: I will test if I will need these materials by creating a list of materials and tick the materials off when I am actually using them.

 

Ergonomics/ overall sizes: When I am making the product I will check if the height of 43cm actually works on my product.

 

Manufacturing processes and quantity: I will test this by creating a list of dates where we have class and I will calculate the time that we have and test and plan ahead.

 

Equipment/ tools- requirements: I will create a list of tools and check of the ones that I use each time to check if I am actually using all of these tools.

 

Maintenance Requirements: I will test the product by putting it outside in windy weather for 1 hour to see if it is in its spot.

 

Product life span and life cycle: I will research and test if the materials that I am using are actually reusable materials or not.

 

Aesthetic appearance (Shape, color, texture): I will conduct a survey to people after I make my product to make sure that my final drawing matches with my product.

 

Quality Assurance: I will test this by putting weights on to my product so see if I need less that once in 3 months.

 

Quality Control: I will check if the product works properly. This will decided when the Quality Control is conducted.

 

Cost: I will create a list of products I used and will calculate the cost to see if it meets my criteria.

 

Time scale and planning: I will make a schedule to see if the time frame that I have to make the product is actually more than 40 hours.

 

Health and safety: I will check my self if it has any dangerous parts and fix any problems.

 

Weight: I will be putting my product on a weight to see if it is less than 10 kg.
